The Origins of Litto Gomez

Before becoming one of the cigar industry's most influential figures Inocencio "Litto" Gomez followed an entirely different career path. Born in Spain and raised in Uruguay Gomez later immigrated to Canada before settling in Miami, where he established a successful jewellery business with his wife, Ines.
A traumatic armed robbery in the early 1990s dramatically altered the family's future. After surviving the incident Gomez decided to sell the jewellery business and seek a completely different career.

The Birth of La Flor Dominicana

The Gomez family's first venture into cigars began with a brand called Los Libertadores. 
Although the project introduced them to premium cigar manufacturing disagreements with investors eventually led Litto and Ines to establish their own independent company.
In 1994 they founded Tabacalera La Flor S.A. and in 1996 officially introduced the La Flor Dominicana brand. 
Initially the company produced relatively mild cigars, reflecting prevailing market preferences at the time. However, Litto Gomez soon envisioned creating richer, stronger blends that showcased the full potential of Dominican tobacco.
The company also embraced the concept of boutique cigar production long before it became fashionable. Learning the Art of Tobacco

Unlike many established cigar manufacturers the Gomez family had no tobacco plantations or inherited curing barns. Everything had to be learned from the ground up.
Litto spent countless hours visiting tobacco farms throughout the Dominican Republic, studying soil conditions, seed varieties, fermentation techniques, and curing methods.

 Building a Factory During the Cigar Boom

Launching a cigar company during the cigar boom of the mid-1990s presented extraordinary challenges. Demand for premium cigars had surged worldwide, creating fierce competition for skilled rollers, quality tobacco and factory space.
Rather than outsourcing production indefinitely the Gomez family invested in building their own factory in Tamboril, near Santiago, the heart of the Dominican Republic's cigar-producing region.

Although Litto Gomez often receives public recognition as the creative force behind La Flor Dominicana the company's success has always been a family achievement.
Ines Lorenzo Gomez has played a central role in managing the company's operations, administration, finance, international relationships and strategic development. 
Throughout periods of rapid growth and economic uncertainty she helped establishing the business infrastructure necessary for long-term sustainability.
Within the premium cigar industry, where founders frequently receive most of the attention, Ines represents an example of the indispensable leadership often provided behind the scenes by family members whose contributions ensure operational stability.

The Pursuit of Complete Vertical Integration

One of the Gomez family's most significant strategic decisions was investing in tobacco farming.

 

The tobacco barns are filling up at La Flor Dominicana’s farm in La Canela, which is located in the Cibao Valley of the Dominican Republic.

Rather than depending entirely on external suppliers La Flor Dominicana gradually developed its own farms in La Canela, located within the fertile Cibao Valley.

In the greenhouse, La Flor Dominicana owner Litto Gomez shows a nursery full of Criollo ’99 tobacco to a tour group. The seedlings will later be transplanted to the fields.

Growing its own tobacco gave the company unprecedented control over leaf quality, fermentation schedules and blend consistency. 

Gomez takes a walk under the tents, also called tapado. The tenting filters the sun’s rays, making for cleaner, thinner tobacco pristine enough to be used as wrapper. Here, this field of newly planted Habano 2000 tobacco will soon grow to more than seven feet tall.

Over time, La Flor Dominicana became known for cultivating Dominican wrapper, binder and filler tobaccos that expressed the distinctive terroir of the region.

The factory floor is quite busy, where rollers produce brands like the La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero and Andalusian Bull, a former Cigar of the Year.

Vertical integration also reduced the company's vulnerability to fluctuations in tobacco availability while allowing greater experimentation with seed varieties and fermentation techniques.

In 1999, we challenged ourselves to produce a cigar made entirely with tobacco grown on our farm. We knew it was a difficult task because it implied growing our own wrapper. The investment was big and the risk too, but the most difficult part was the waiting. The process of fermentation and aging took longer than expected, but the result was great. 
Today we can celebrate this great achievement. Every year we create a new vintage edition of our LG Dominican Puro, with four year old tobacco.

Our Cameroon Cabinets are very limited because we only use aged Ligero Cameroon wrappers, dark and oily.

This blend is as special as the occasion it serves to commemorate and is symbolic of the quality and pride with which La Flor Dominicana has built its name.

Litto Gomez Jr. was born into the cigar world. 
La Flor Dominicana had been founded 6 years before he first opened his eyes and 22 years later with the help of his father Litto and older brother Tony his first project has come to fruition. 
Solis, derived from the Latin word “sol”, features a sun grown Habano wrapper, Sumatra Binder, and a blend of Dominican tobaccos from La Flor Dominicana’s farm in La Canela. The resulting smoke is powerful and charismatic with bright flavors nuanced through a range of spices that make it unique yet undeniably LFD.

Don’t stroll down memory lane, run through it! 
Packing a surprising punch and a unique flavor unlike any LFD you’ve ever smoked before, these are certainly not your grandfather’s candela. 
The wrapper is Ecuadorian with Nicaraguan binder and Dominican filler.

Combining the best of both worlds, the Colorado Oscuro is wrapped in a dark Nicaraguan Habano wrapper, uses a Dominican binder, and is rounded out with a blend of Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers. 
The result is a uniquely full-bodied burst of flavor!
