How His Journey Started

Before joining Drew Estate:

  • Worked at The Calabash Shoppe cigar retailer in Connecticut beginning in 1996.
  • Studied International Business at Quinnipiac University.
  • Worked in Italy during the Vatican Jubilee.
  • Traveled extensively through Europe and Asia.

During a trip to Japan, Melillo received an email from Jonathan Drew that was distinctive and made history: "Give me a call; we obviously have some very serious matters to discuss."

Nicholas Melillo at Drew Estate (2003–2014)

Nicholas Melillo—known in the premium cigar industry by the nickname "Nick R. Agua"—was a key, influential figure who worked behind the scenes at Drew Estate, helping the company evolve from a small "boutique" premium cigar brand into one of the largest producers in the global market.
He began his tenure in March 2003 at the age of just 24 and remained with Drew Estate for 11 consecutive years, based in Estelí, Nicaragua. Cigar Aficionado  Cigar Aficionado  

His First Responsibilities

At that time Drew Estate was a small company and when Nicholas Melillo went to Estelí he began learning each of the following departments:

  • Factory production
  • Packaging
  • Warehousing
  • Tobacco handling
  • Inventory
  • Shipping
  • Fermentation

Melillo would later refer to this, saying, "I was thrown straight in at the deep end." He often added that Jonathan Drew gave him a brief introduction to the lay of the land and then left him to discover and learn the key parameters and directions through hands-on experience.  Cigar Aficionado  

Director of Tobaccos & Production

This was Nicholas Melillo's first official executive position.

1. Tobacco Purchasing

He was responsible for tobacco purchasing for Drew Estate's entire production, negotiating directly with growers and suppliers across the following regions:

2. Fermentation

It involved supervising and monitoring the entire tobacco fermentation process, which was viewed as the "heart" of the flavor in premium cigars. The scope of work encompassed the following responsibilities:

One of his most fundamental and well-known responsibilities—which earned him great acclaim—involved contributing to the improvement and production of numerous Drew Estate blends by selecting and combining tobaccos to achieve the desired flavor profiles.

4. Production Planning

A role that became extremely complex as Drew Estate was growing rapidly. Responsibilities included:

At every stage of the production process there was a quality oversight role that encompassed the following:

Vice President of International Operations

By the end of his tenure, Melillo held greater responsibilitie and his remit encompassed a broader scope involving:

  • International tobacco sourcing

Major Cigars Developed During His Tenure

Melillo played a pivotal role in the creation of Drew Estate’s most commercially successful cigars, contributing to blend formulation as well as the development and oversight of the production process. Some of these include the following:

Factory Growth During His Leadership

Why He Left Drew Estate

Melillo has described his departure from Drew Estate as one of the most difficult decisions of his entire professional career.
His intention was to launch his own premium cigar company, a move also driven by serious concerns regarding the volatility of FDA regulations, which threatened to restrict the ability to launch new brands in the industry in the near future.
He left Drew Estate in 2014 and founded Foundation Cigar Company in 2015, using capital derived from Swisher’s acquisition of Drew Estate—specifically, the proceeds from the sale of the minority ownership stake he held.  Cigar Aficionado  Cigar Aficionado

Melillo grew up in the Connecticut River Valley—a region of global renown for tobacco cultivation—and had already earned the esteem and respect of cigar producers across Central America before founding Foundation Cigar.
His deep love for tobacco predated his professional involvement in the premium cigar industry. This passion eventually led him to Nicaragua, where, over the years, he mastered every aspect of the production process.
He studied and thoroughly investigated cultivation, fermentation, processing techniques, the tobacco market, quality control and factory operation rather than focusing solely on the creation and production of blends.

Nicholas Melillo: The Vision Behind the Brand

Nicholas Melillo is one of the few cigar producers with such diverse professional experience.
He worked in Nicaragua for many years—prior to founding Foundation Cigars—dedicating himself intensely to blend creation, production process management and tobacco sourcing.
His career path included a significant tenure at Drew Estate, where hands-on experience gave him direct insight and knowledge regarding the supervision and control of the production process, working closely with tobacco growers in Nicaragua.  Foundation Cigars
